Our training days
About this day
Deer Services UK is, first and foremost, a working deer management operation across West Sussex. We're not an experience provider running pretend stalks, the deer we manage are part of a year-round programme that protects woodland, farmland and road safety in the South of England.
A handful of times each season, we open that ground up to people who genuinely want to learn the craft, from the people who do it for a living. This is a full day in the field, capped at two clients, led by a DSC2-qualified guide with over 20 years of deer stalking experience.
It's ideal if you're considering the DSC1 qualification, applying for a firearms certificate, or simply want to know whether deer stalking is for you before committing further.
Is this day for you?
We designed this day for people taking their first steps into deer stalking. You'll get the most from it if you are:
A complete beginner curious about deer stalking and the role it plays in modern conservation
Preparing for the DSC1 and want hands-on field experience before the assessment
An FAC applicant building documented experience to support your application
A landowner or farmer considering taking on deer management on your own ground
Buying a gift for someone with a serious interest in the countryside
You do not need any prior shooting experience. You do need to be comfortable on your feet for several hours and content outdoors in British weather.

What to bring
We provide everything you need to stalk. You bring yourself dressed for a full day outdoors:
Sturdy walking boots with ankle support - waterproof if you have them
Warm layers in muted colours (greens, browns, greys - no bright colours, blue, white or noisy clothes)
A waterproof jacket and trousers, especially November to March
A warm hat and gloves in winter
A small daypack for water and any personal items
Glasses or contact lenses if you wear them for distance
We'll send a full kit list when you book. If you're unsure about anything, just ask.
An honest word about wild deer
Our deer are wild and free-ranging, we don't stalk in deer parks. That's part of why a day with us is worth doing, and it's also why we can never guarantee a shot. Some days the wind doesn't behave, or the deer don't show, or the right animal doesn't present in the right place.
What we do guarantee: a full day's tuition, time behind the rifle, expert field-craft instruction, a proper lunch, and a venison box to take home. Whether or not a shot is taken, you'll leave knowing more about deer stalking than ninety percent of the people who claim to.

Why Deer Services UK
A working operation
DSC2 led
Lead guide holds the Deer Stalking Certificate Level 2. All guides hold a minimum of DSC1.
Year-round deer management across the South. Training is a small part of what we do.
Multiple estates
Multiple grounds, chosen on the day for wind, weather and deer activity.
When we run
Our training days focus on fallow deer, by some margin the most numerous species across our Sussex grounds. Roe and muntjac also feature on our ground year-round, and an experienced guide will read the conditions on the day and put you in front of whichever species offers the best learning opportunity.
The fallow season runs:
Fallow bucks - 1st August to 30th April
Fallow does - 1st November to 31st March
We run training days from August through April, with the peak season for combined buck and doe stalking being November to March. Outside these months we focus bespoke days on roe and muntjac, both of which are in season through the summer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a firearms certificate to attend?
No. You'll be using our estate rifle under direct supervision. Many of our clients attend specifically to build experience before applying for an FAC.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be comfortable walking on uneven ground for several hours, sometimes in wet conditions. If you're unsure, get in touch — we'll be honest about whether the day will work for you.
Will I definitely shoot a deer?
No, and any provider who promises otherwise is misleading you. Our deer are wild. A shot is taken only when conditions, animal and placement are all right. You'll get the full day of training and your venison box either way.
What's the minimum age?
18. We don't take under-18s on training days.
Is this the same as the DSC1?
No. The DSC1 is a formal assessed qualification. This is a structured, full-day introduction designed for people considering the DSC1 or simply wanting hands-on experience. We provide a written summary of your day that can support an FAC application or DSC1 preparation.
Can I bring my own rifle?
For first-time clients, no — we use estate rifles we know are zeroed and reliable. Once you hold an FAC and have stalked with us before, we can discuss it.
What happens if a deer is shot?
You'll be involved in the recovery and gralloch (field dressing) if you wish - this is invaluable experience. The carcass enters our normal management chain. You'll go home with your prepared venison box.
What if the weather is awful?
We stalk in most weather - rain doesn't stop deer or stalkers. If conditions are genuinely unsafe (high winds, severe storms), we'll reschedule at no cost.
